Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal career appeared to be over just a few months ago.
The 26-year-old failed to make a serious impression during his season-long loan spell with Bournemouth last term and was struggling to force his way into the Gunners’ starting line-up during the opening weeks of the current campaign.
Wilshere was linked with a shock move to Real Betis in November while the prospect of him leaving the Emirates Stadium in order to boost his chances of making England’s 2018 World Cup squad seemed very real.
However, Wilshere’s situation has completely changed over the past couple of months.
The England international has re-established his status as a key member of the Gunners’ squad thanks to a series of commanding performances in central midfield.
Arsenal fans love Wilshere and the feeling is mutual. The Stevenage-born midfielder, who joined the north London outfit at the age of nine, is a Gunner through and through.
However, like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, Wilshere is out of contract this summer and is free to negotiate a move to another club.
Arsenal fans are desperate for the club to announce the player has signed a contract extension and, after what’s happened over the past few weeks, it would be a major shock if that failed to happen.
Neville gives his honest opinion about Wilshere
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher discussed Wilshere following the Red Devils’ 3-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday night.
And Arsenal supporters loved what Neville had to say about their midfield hero.
"He's the best English midfield player by a street," Neville told Monday Night Football, per Sky Sports.
"I worked with all of the English midfield players for four years and he could play in any single team in this country and live in that team or any single team in Europe, he is that good.”
Now that’s what you call high praise.
"The problem with Jack Wilshere is his fitness and his injuries and his reliability,” Neville conceded. “If you had him playing every week he is a wonderful, wonderful player. He has a great attitude, he trains well and he has got fantastic ability.
"He takes the ball on the half-turn and he's the only English central midfield player [like that]. Dele Alli yes and Ross Barkley yes, but I class them as being more forwards.
"I've worked with him and I've got no allegiance to Jack Wilshere or Arsenal Football Club and this is a fantastic player and talent, who is a must for England if he is fit and playing well."
