There’s very little doubt that Chelsea could do with signing a striker in the January transfer window.

They’ve scored just one goal in their four matches in 2018 - a Michy Batshuayi strike against Norwich in their FA Cup third-round replay.

And with £70 million signing Alvaro Morata suffering a real confidence crisis having not scored since their 2-0 victory over Brighton on Boxing Day, Antonio Conte is desperate for a quality back-up.

The Italian boss clearly doesn’t rate Batshuayi, having given him very few opportunities this season.

But Chelsea fans haven’t exactly been excited at the strikers they have been linked with during this window.

They reportedly agreed a deal to sign Andy Carroll before scans revealed the seriousness of his ankle injury.

Then, on Thursday evening, it was reported that they had turned their attentions from Carroll to 36-year-old Peter Crouch. Seriously?

However, the latest report in the Daily Mail makes for slightly better reading for Chelsea fans.

They claim that the club have now turned their attentions to Roma’s Edin Dzeko.

While the former Manchester City striker turns 32 in March, there’s very little doubt he would be welcomed at Stamford Bridge. After all, he scored twice at that ground earlier this season in the Champions League - one of which was a sensational left-footed volley.

While the Italian club prefer not to sell this month, Chelsea are willing to offer Michy Batshuayi on loan as part of the deal.

But it now seems Dzeko is ahead of the likes of Crouch, Fernando Llorente and Christian Benteke in Conte’s wishlist.

Dzeko isn’t the only player Conte wants to sign from Roma, though. According to the same report, he’s eyeing a £40 million double-swoop for the striker and left-back Emerson Palmieri.

Maybe this transfer window won’t be a disaster for Chelsea after all.
