Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that Loris Karius is Liverpool’s first-team goalkeeper.
Simon Mignolet started the season as the No.1 but Karius has taken over after making his first Premier League start of 2018 in the 4-3 win over Manchester City last weekend.
"He's the number one now," Klopp said, per BBC Sport. “Loris needs to deliver and he knows that."
The goalkeeper position at Liverpool has been a sticky point for some time now and Liverpool have been linked with a number of highly-rated shot-stoppers, including Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Alisson of Roma and Stoke City’s Jack Butland.
But Klopp believes his current two have been treated harshly by fans and the media, acting on their every error.
Klopp made a great point about Butland’s possible arrival, saying that fans would demand a new goalkeeper if he signed the England international and he went on to make a mistake.
What Klopp has said about Jack Butland
"My favourite solution, always, is that we do it with our boys," Klopp said, per the Liverpool Echo.
"They step up, they deliver, they improve. The problem they have is that everyone is watching them (through a magnifying glass) and saying 'still not good enough!'
"I will only mention one name. Everyone talks about him with us and that is Butland. I only saw the game (against Manchester United).
"Fantastic goalkeeper but was he perfect? No. He wasn’t in that game. But everyone says 'still better than our boys!'
"It makes no real sense if he comes in and makes a mistake in his first game. Everyone then says 'we need another and another one and another one'. We have to cool down. These boys all have big quality.
"These lads are here and now they have to create a situation where they can show it every week. It doesn’t mean they will be free of mistakes for the next 20 years. Nobody can do that."
Karius must deliver
Karius and Mignolet will appreciate Klopp showing his support for them both.
But surely he’s seen enough of both to realise that neither are of the quality required to make Liverpool serious contenders?
Karius was beaten at his near post by Leroy Sane last week and that wasn’t the first time he’s failed to impress.
With the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona leaving Klopp with a heap of money to spend, Karius will be fully aware that his manager can easily sign another goalkeeper in the summer.
