Blackwell wants Blades midfielder to stay

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has issued a plea to midfielder Nick Montgomery to stay at Bramall Lane.

Montgomery, who has been one of the Blades top performers this season, is out of contract at the end of the current season. With a frantic summer reshuffle on the cards, Blackwell is desperate for Montgomery to sign a new deal as he feels his presence will give his side some much needed continuity and authority.

Blackwell told the club's website: "He has been exemplary for a long time now and that's why I want him to sign, but I need help from those who sort contracts out."

Blackwell added: "I believe that the majority of our fans now appreciate what he does for us and he has been an absolute colossus for us.

"Monty is well respected in the game and there are things in his game that we need. He is a Blade through and through and if I'm honest I believe deep down that he would like to stay."
