Henrikh Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal from Manchester United on Monday evening, whilst Alexis Sanchez went in the other direction.

The 29-year-old Armenian midfielder - who spent 18 months as a United player - posted a classy goodbye message on social media late on Monday night.

Veteran Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Mkhitaryan can flourish alongside fellow playmaker Mesut Ozil.

"Mkhitaryan can play on the wing or in midfield, so I believe he can play very well in many positions," Wenger said. "That can help us as well because he can play together with Ozil as well as playmaker, so overall it’s a good move.

"We’re replacing a very good player with a very good player, a world-class player with a world-class player.

"He's a very complete player. He creates chances, he defends well, he can absorb distances and he’s very committed as well. I must say he’s a player who has all the attributes."

Mkhitaryan's classy farewell post

The former Borussia Dortmund star was a popular figure amongst the Old Trafford faithful and revealed the key reason behind his decision to join Arsenal in his goodbye post on social media.

"I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Manchester United players and staff and especially the fans for your love, passion and support.

"I enjoyed having the honour of contributing to the history of your great club by winning the Europa League cup. I will always cherish the memory of that moment and that match. And of my Boxing Day scorpion kick and of hearing the song “Whoa Mkhitaryan...” every time I stepped onto the pitch. I could name many more memories, I enjoyed every moment we shared and cheered together.

"At this stage of my career, I simply have to enjoy myself on the pitch and play. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and the best of luck to all of you! Life goes on😉❤️"

He may be desperate to enjoy himself on the pitch but his Arsenal debut will have to wait until next week as the Armenian is cup-tied for the Carabao Cup second-leg semi-final against Chelsea this Wednesday.
