LeBron James made history by becoming the youngest NBA player to reach 30,000 career points – although it was another lacklustre night for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they fell 114-102 to the San Antonio Spurs.

The 33-year-old hit the milestone in the final second of the first quarter and joined the highly exclusive club of seven players to reach the mark first set by Wilt Chamberlain of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972.

‘King James’ arrived at the AT&T Centre in San Antonio needing seven points to reach the record, set by Kobe Bryan in December 2012.

It was eclipsed with a 19ft jumper that earned a standing ovation from Cavaliers and Spurs fans alike.

James celebrated his birthday 24 days ago, while Bryant was aged 34 and 104 days when he scored his 30,000th point.

Dallas Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki is the only other current player with the achievement under his belt, having reached the mark in March.

They stand alongside former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan, ex-Lakers and Utah Jazz player Karl Malone and all-time point record holder Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who also finished his career with the Lakers.

But in the end on Tuesday James racked up two fewer points than the youngest player on court – LaMarcus Aldridge who scored 30 in what became Cleveland’s 10th loss in 13 games.

In Florida it was a good night for Garrett Temple who scored a career-high 34 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter to see the Sacramento Kings edge Orlando Magic 105-99.

The win ended an eight-game skid for the Kings, who also had Willie Cauley-Stein to thank for scoring 21 and Buddy Hield for taking 13. For Orlando Evan Fournier scored 22 and Elfrid Payton scored 21.

Russell Westbrook’s layup with under four seconds left of the fourth quarter squeaked Oklahoma City Thunder past the Brooklyn Nets 109-108.

Oklahoma City rallied from 15 points behind in the second half, before an exhilarating final two and a half minutes in which the lead changed six times before Westbrook’s coup de grace.

There were similar dramatics in Los Angeles as Kyle Kuzma lifted the Lakers 108-107 over the Boston Celtics, their fourth loss in a row.

Elsewhere defending champions the Golden State Warriors punished the New York Knicks 123-112, the Californians’ seventh win in a row.
