Colchester boosted their play-off challenge and dealt a blow to Swindon's hopes of automatic promotion with an important 3-0 win.

Jonathan Douglas and Danny Ward both went close for the Robins, before Charlie Austin blazed over from five yards after goalkeeper Ben Williams failed to hold Billy Paynter's header.

But Colchester took the lead in the 24th minute through Ashley Vincent, who fired home at the third attempt from David Prutton's fine pass after shrugging off Alan Sheehan.

Gordon Greer smacked a shot against the crossbar for Swindon just before half-time but the Us almost extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Robins keeper David Lucas kept out Anthony Wordsworth's low shot.

Williams made an outstanding stop to thwart Danny Ward from point-blank range midway through the second half, but Wordsworth swept home from the edge of the box from Kevin Lisbie's pass with 21 minutes to go.

Wordsworth then added a third in the second minute of stoppage time when he robbed Scott Cuthbert and played a one-two with Lisbie, before stroking past Lucas.
