A brilliant goal by Walsall striker Darren Byfield earned his team a 2-1 victory and added to Tranmere's relegation fears at the Banks's Stadium.
Byfield notched his ninth goal of the season in the 70th minute after a dazzling run took him past two defenders before he finished with a clinical shot past Luke Daniels.
But the Saddlers had to come from behind to clinch their second double of the season because Tranmere had been the better side in the opening stages and took the lead after 27 minutes when a low cross from Gareth Edds was deflected past his own keeper by home defender Manny Smith.
Smith made amends for that 10 minutes before half-time when he moved up for a corner taken by Steve Jones and sent a downward header just inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Despite some outstanding work up front from Bas Savage, Tranmere made little headway in the second half against a sound home defence and Byfield pushed them closer to the drop with his brilliant individual effort 20 minutes from the end.
Jones should have made sure for Walsall when he burst through the middle in stoppage time but he shot straight at keeper Daniels and despite some late pressure Tranmere could not rescue a point.
