Philippe Coutinho made his highly-anticipated debut for Barcelona last night.

The Brazilian playmaker replaced Andres Iniesta in the 68th minute of Barça’s 2-0 Copa del Rey win over Espanyol.

And all eyes were on the £142 million man as he began a new chapter in his career.

Coutinho, who was forced to wait to make his debut after arriving from Liverpool with a thigh injury, looked mightily impressive in his 22 minutes of action, displaying some neat touches and attempting to kickstart attacks.

Cleary, he was eager to shine.

What the Spanish press said about Coutinho

The 25-year-old’s display got the Spanish papers talking and the general consensus was that Coutinho’s debut was a positive one.

“Barcelona fans will have liked what they saw in the 22 minutes was on the Camp Nou pitch against Espanyol,” was the reaction from Marca.

“The new signing made his debut, coming off the bench to replace Andres Iniesta, and immediately he was turning heads - and twisting past defenders.

“One of the very first things he did was come up with a nutmeg, one which got the fans off their seats.

“He was quick, he was direct, he dribbled and he asked for the ball, taking responsibility even at this very early stage of his Barcelona career.

“Besides a couple of misplaced passes, he didn't put a foot wrong.”

Meanwhile Sport, who graded Coutinho’s display as eight out of 10, wrote: “No headline moments but looked so at home in a Barça shirt on his debut.

“Comfortable on the ball and created a great chance for Suarez.”

The Spanish press clearly enjoyed what they saw. AS noted that Coutinho “looked very tide on the ball”.

Coutinho: I was a bit nervous

The Brazil international admitted that he was nervous about making his first appearance, although he’s thankful to the Barcelona fans for giving him a warm welcome.

“I was a bit nervous and anxious, but later I calmed down and adapted to the game,” Coutinho told Barca TV.

“I am very happy to have played my first minutes with this club. I was moved by my reception.

"In the end we won, which was the most important thing, and got through to the next round.”

Coutinho had better get used to that winning feelings.
