BBC pundit Alan Shearer has revealed what surprises him about Arsenal's January pursuit of proven goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners completed the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier this week but are still looking to bolster their attacking options in the wake of Alexis Sanchez' exit.

Aubameyang, who is pushing for a move, has been left out of Borussia Dortmund's last two matchday squads amid interest from Arsene Wenger's side.

The 28-year-old Gabonese striker has scored 13 goals in 15 Bundesliga games this season and has unquestionably been a major success in Dortmund since signing from St. Etienne in 2013.

However, reports coming out of Germany suggest Arsenal are still some way off Dortmund's valuation for their prized asset.

“I cannot tell you more," Wenger said in his Friday morning press conference. We have nothing to announce. At the moment, we stay where we are.

“We have added Mkhitaryan and lost Sanchez. Will anything else happen? At the moment, I don’t know.

“It is far from close. It is possible we will recruit someone else but I won’t give you a name.”

Shearer's honest thoughts on Aubameyang

The Premier League's all-time record goalscorer shared his opinion on Arsenal's potential club-record signing of the 28-year-old striker.

Asked by Coral's David Stevens if he was surprised more top teams weren't in for Aubameyang, Shearer replied: "Yeah I am when you look at his goalscoring record.

"He's 28 years of age, by the sounds of it he hasn't got a clause in his contract, when you look at the number of clubs that need a goalscorer.

"And the fee being £40-£50m, which in today's transfer market is relatively cheap for a guy with his goalscoring record.

"So yeah, I'm pretty surprised he's picking Arsenal - because they aren't in the Champions League.

"But if they were to have Mkhitaryan and to get Aubameyang with his goals then it would it be a decent transfer window for Arsenal."

Shearer is surprised that Aubameyang would want to join Arsenal - but perhaps his off-the-field reputation has turned off a number of potential suitors.

He's been disciplined by Dortmund on various occasions during his four-and-a-half year stay.

Arsenal, who rely on Alexandre Lacazette and Olivier Giroud up front, have less than a week to negotiate a deal with Dortmund before the transfer window closes.
