Alexis Sanchez breezed into action as a Manchester United player last night with an impressive performance against League Two Yeovil Town.

The trip to Huish Park didn't pose the most romantic of debuts but Sanchez displayed what he can bring to the Red Devils very quickly. The Chilean provided an assist for Ander Herrera and bagged the Man of the Match award in 72 minutes of football.

Not bad going, right? Many fans were surprised that Sanchez had been chosen from the start, taking residence on the left side of an attacking triumvirate with Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford.

Mourinho justified the decision after the game by explaining: “He needed to play. He didn't play for Arsenal in the last two or three matches. His training was not good when you have half of your body in the Emirates and half in Manchester, so he needed to train well. He needed to play."

Fair play, Jose, and the game-time won't do him any harm going into a crucial few months for United. Fans will still be wondering the exact role Sanchez will play going forward, though.

Quiet opening 20 minutes v Yeovil

For all of Sanchez's brilliant moments in Somerset, the 29-year-old experienced a quiet opening 20 minutes and the BBC pundits on duty picked up on it at half-time.

Presenter Gary Lineker brought up the observation and the duo of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright certainly didn't put it down to opening nerves.

Wright opened the discussion, saying: "Like I say, I was surprised how much he stayed out on the left. I think he has been more effective when he's gone all the way inside."

"For the first 15 or 20 minutes, he was sort of hugging this left-hand touchline, and we're saying: 'when he's going to break away and make those runs that we so often saw at Arsenal?" Shearer added.

Drift inwards or stay out wide?

Eventually Sanchez did break away from the flank with both pundits acknowledging that it improved his game almost instantly.

Shearer continued: "When he started to drift, then he had more of an influence on the game and he's been their best player, he looked quick, he looked sharp and he's been a good outlet for them."

"That is where he causes the problems, I think he's been out on the left for far too long. He can't stay out there like he has been staying out there," Wright concurred.

Shearer: "He's very, very difficult to pick up when he comes inside that like that. When he's got the ball at his feet with the pace and the strength that he has to run at the defenders, that's when he's a nuisance."

Nevertheless, the Newcastle legend concluded that he believes Mourinho will continue to use the Chilean on the left-hand side, hoping that he'll be allowed to cut in when selected so.
