Hardly a week passes by without the Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate surfacing on social media.

Whenever Messi does something good, Barcelona fans can’t wait to label the Argentinian the world’s greatest player. And it’s the same for those who follow Real Madrid.

Yet what makes the argument so fascinating is that even non-Barcelona and Real Madrid supporters love to debate it, too.

Right now, it’s hard to put Ronaldo over Messi despite him winning the Ballon d’Or last month.

The Barcelona forward has been utterly mesmeric of late, scoring nine goals in his past 11 appearances and adding five assists.

But the struggle has been very real for Ronaldo. His scored just his fifth and sixth league goals of the campaign in last weekend’s win over Deportivo La Coruna and murmurs of a decline are increasing.

What Tevez has said about Messi and Ronaldo

Everyone has their own opinion of the duo and Carlos Tevez has weighed in with a point that makes a whole lot of sense.

We should probably listen to Tevez. He's played with Messi for Argentina and with Ronaldo for Manchester United.

Tevez believes his compatriot has God-given abilities to shine at football, whereas Ronaldo had to work hard in the gym and on the training ground to become one of the all-time greats.

“Cristiano is totally different to Messi,” Tevez told ESPN Argentina, per Goal.

“When Leo was starting out, he didn’t touch a gym. But Cristiano was there in the morning, afternoon and evening, all the time.

“Cristiano had to work and prepare himself to be the best, while for Leo it comes naturally.

“Those are the greatest differences that I see between the two best players on the planet.

“Messi plays another sport. For Messi to score three goals [in any given game] is normal.”

Tevez wants Argentina return

Ronaldo does, of course, have the luxury of international success, something Tevez and Messi have been unable to achieve together for the Albiceleste.

Tevez, who recently returned to Boca Juniors, hasn’t played for his country since 2015 but he’s targeting a spot in the squad for the World Cup in Russia.

“I haven't got many years left of football and to be in a World Cup, for a player of my age it would something beautiful and it would be a sign of recognition too," the 33-year-old said earlier this month.

There’s also the added incentive of getting to play alongside Messi once again.
