Liverpool have endured an incredibly topsy-turvy January so far that has left most fans unsure of what kind of position the club is in.

It began fantastically well, with the club record transfer of Virgil van Dijk finally being completed. Things then got even better as Van Dijk capped his debut with the winner against Everton in the FA Cup.

Things were quickly brought back to earth, however, as Liverpool's other major summer transfer saga was also completed: Philippe Coutinho left to join Barcelona.

But then things suddenly looked a whole lot less bleak as Liverpool became the first side to beat runaway league leaders Manchester City, beating them 4-3 at Anfield in arguably the game of the season.

However back-to-back defeats in their two games since - against 20th place Swansea and 19th place West Brom, no less - has changed the attitude at Liverpool once again.

Things now don't look quite so rosy, and the apparent decision not to reinvest the Coutinho money this money is quickly being viewed as a real lack of intent from within the club.

Making things worse is the contractual status of midfielder Emre Can, who is currently able to leave for free at the end of the season.

The German has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus this month, but the Italian champions are yet to bid.

Jurgen Klopp moved to try and clear up Can's future after Liverpool's FA Cup defeat to West Brom - and while fans will see more of him at Anfield, they may not see him there for long.

"He'll stay beyond the winter," Klopp told DAZN, per Goal. "Emre is still a young lad but he has developed into a great player and is very important for us.

"Sometimes a player just wants to sit out his contract. That's not cool for the club, but there are moments in which you have to accept it.

"And as long as the player behaves like Emre does, then I have absolutely nothing to complain about. He gives everything he has and identifies with the club."

From the sounds of it, Can's mind is made up and he looks set to leave the club come the summer.

Whether that's to Italy remains to be seen as both Manchester City and Bayern Munich have been tentatively linked in recent weeks.

It's certainly more bad news for Liverpool though; further investment at Anfield is looking more and more needed.
