On the pre-show of last night's (Sun. January 28, 2018) WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) event, United States Champion Bobby Roode held an Open Challenge for his title.

It was Mojo Rawley who came out to answer the call, however, a report from PWInsider reports that wasn't the company's original plan. The report suggests that it was Dolph Ziggler who was first planned to answer the call from Roode.

Instead WWE decided to have Ziggler return to WWE TV as the 30th entrant in the Men's Royal Rumble match. He came into the match and immediately eliminated Goldust but was soon after eliminated himself by Finn Balor.

Ziggler hasn't been seen on WWE TV since the December 19th episode of SmackDown Live. He won the United States Title the night before at Clash Of Champions by defeating then-champion Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode in a Triple Threat match.

The following night on SmackDown Live Ziggler went off on the WWE Universe via promo, before dropping the title in the ring and seemingly walking out on the company.

PWInsider did report that Ziggler is scheduled to be at tomorrow night's SmackDown Live episode, so it's likely he is put back into the United States Title picture.

Now that Roode has won the United States Championship Tournament and is the new title holder, it's likely a feud between "The Glorious One" and Ziggler gets underway to crown the true United States Champion.

Ziggler has been used for the past several months to put over younger talents that have been called up from NXT; such as Shinsuke Nakamura, Roode, and a few more. There has been a ton of speculation on his WWE future as it's the consensus of the masses that he's being grossly misused by WWE.

It should be interesting to see how WWE used Ziggler in this storyline and if he ultimately decides to leave the company when his contract is up.

What are your thoughts on WWE's initial plans to have Ziggler challenge Roode for the US Title? Do you like the move to have had Ziggler enter as the 30th entrant into the Royal Rumble instead?
