Manager Gary Simpson paid tribute to former boss Keith Alexander after Macclesfield all but secured safety with a battling 1-1 draw against Burton.

Nat Brown headed the Silkmen in front but despite dominating the game they failed to find a second goal and were pegged back when veteran striker Matthew Tipton glanced past his own keeper.

Simpson was quick to praise Alexander for his work at the club, saying: "Me and the big man have started something here and it's something I really want to finish. The players know me, I had a hand in bricking them in and I feel we can go on strongly from here."

He added: "We've got nine first-team players out but still produced a very strong performance and it shows the character of the lads and the squad we put together."
