Leroy Sane’s six-week layoff with an ankle injury has left Pep Guardiola with a decision to make.

In his pursuit of the quadruple, the Manchester City boss has seemingly decided the best course of action is to do what he’s done a lot of during his time at the Etihad Stadium - spend.

On Tuesday, the Premier League leaders made a bid of £50 million for Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez, which was rejected by the Foxes.

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester have since rejected a new bid of £55m from Man City as they attempt to extract as much money as they can for the Algerian winger.

Mahrez has put in a transfer request but the deadline is approaching and it remains to be seen whether Man City will come back with another bid.

Especially when they learn how much Leicester want for the 26-year-old.

The Mail are reporting that the Foxes are seeking nearly £100m for Mahrez, having seen Philippe Coutinho join Barcelona for £145m and Liverpool pay £75m for Virgil van Dijk.

Leicester view those figures as benchmarks for Mahrez’s valuation.

Leicester have a replacement lined up

It seems unlikely that Man City would be willing to spend such an amount on a player who wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter upon Sane’s return to action.

But Leicester have a replacement lined up in the event that Mahrez does become a Man City player today.

Per the Mail, the 2015-16 Premier League champions are interested in Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend and could make a move for the player should Mahrez depart.

It sounds like we’re in for an extremely busy day.

Mahrez’s desire to leave the King Power Stadium has been well documented and he revealed how hungry he is to win trophies in an interview with the Mail in December.

“Of course I want to win more trophies,” he said. “I’ve always had the ambition to win a lot of trophies. It's what we are playing for.

“At the end of your career, what you will keep in your head is the memory of winning trophies - Premier League, Champions League. Those are the only things you remember.”

Mahrez deserves to play in the Champions League. But many football fans will wonder why Man City aren’t turning to Bernardo Silva or Brahim Diaz to replace Sane in the starting line-up.
