One WWE SmackDown star made history at the Royal Rumble.

And that star is Shinsuke Nakamura. Besides WWE, he is best known for his work in New Japan Pro-Wrestling where he is a former three-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, five-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, one-time IWGP Tag Team Champion, and the winner of the 2011 G1 Climax, 2006 G1 Tag League, and 2014 New Japan Cup tournaments.

Before his WWE main roster debut, Nakamura competed in WWE's developmental branch, NXT where he is one of only two wrestlers to have held the NXT Championship on more than one occasion.

As seen at Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Wells Fargo Center on the WWE Network, Nakamura won the 2018 Royal Rumble Match by beating out John Cena, Finn Balor, and Roman Reigns in the final four.

After the match, Nakamura declared that he would challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 34.

An interesting stat has surfaced online. He was the first Japanese star to win the match and the first person to win from the #14 spot.

Styles was recently interviewed by Planeta Wrestling to discuss various topics. During the interview he talked about wanting to face Nakamura at WrestleMania as well as if a top guy needs to hold the WWE Title here is what he had to say (transcript courtesy of Ewrestlingnews.com):

"Will it happen? I'm not sure. I think there's a lot of matches that people want to see and Shinsuke [vs.] AJ Styles is definitely one of them, also with Bobby Roode," he said. "There's very few people on the SmackDown roster I've yet to have a one-on-one match with, and I think that would be very special to have any one of those guys at WrestleMania."

"I've had a lot of great matches already and I don't know that I can pick just one, I don't know if that's a question for me. Now I did enjoy the WrestleMania match, because it's always bigger than anything else, with Shane McMahon and I'm very proud of that match. That's one that's at the top of my list, but there are many others like with Roman Reigns and John Cena as well, so it's hard to pick just one."

"I think that a championship definitely says something about you, it definitely says you're the guy that puts butts in the seats. The WWE Champion does that for SmackDown, he's our guy that puts butts in the seats, that's why people come to see it. Do you necessarily have to be a top guy to have the championship? You don't have to be. Once you've got the respect of the fans for everything you've done, you can be that top guy. But I personally enjoy being a champion."
