Arsenal fans have been in dreamland over the past 48 hours.

On transfer deadline day (Wednesday) it was confirmed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had completed a club-record £56 million move from Borussia Dortmund.

Aubameyang, who penned a £180,000-per-week contract, essentially arrived as Alexis Sanchez's replacement to also join former teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

And on Friday, Mesut Ozil extended his stay at the Emirates Stadium by signing a new three-and-a-half-year, £350,000-per-week deal (before tax).

Ozil, who is now the Premier League's second highest earner, broke the news on Instagram: "#YaGunnersYa .... ooh yaaa 😎📝 Proud to announce: I signed dat thing 😁.

"3 more years with @Arsenal! It's been one of the most important decisions of my footballing career and that's why I had to think hard and talk with everyone who's important to me.

"Good things take time! In the end I let my heart decide. As I always said, I feel at home here and I'm highly motivated to achieve big things in the next few years.

"Once a Gunner, always a Gunner! #M1Ö #WeAreTheArsenal #London."

By signing a new contract at Arsenal, Ozil put an end to rumours that he was set to leave for one of Manchester United, Real Madrid or Barcelona in the summer as a free agent.

In his Instagram post, the Germany international insisted he followed his heart, but now Manchester Evening News claim that's not why he stayed at Arsenal at all.

In fact, M.E.N reckon Ozil was given no choice but to re-sign with the Gunners after being met by a 'wall of silence' from United, Real and Barca.

They wrote: "Following the signings of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ozil blinked first after being met by a wall of silence when it came to his preferred move to United, Real Madrid or Barcelona where he was even prepared to initially sit on the bench.

"Such was that lack of serious interest, Ozil's camp repeatedly asked this correspondent if he had heard anything from United despite the player's close relationship with Jose Mourinho.

"The former Real Madrid manager only required two hours notice to write a foreword for Ozil's autobiography and Mourinho would have only needed to text Ozil to convince him to stall on the deal or jump ship. But it never came to that."

So, apparently Ozil wanted to leave Arsenal and join United so badly he was prepared to waste away on their bench for a while. Right then.

Arsenal fans have since been reacting to M.E.N's report and judging by the below tweets, they think the claims are pretty funny and, simply put, laughable.
