Since David Haye's unsuccessful heavyweight clash with Wladimir Klitschko in 2011, the 'Hayemaker' has become better known amongst boxing fans for rescheduling bouts rather than actually stepping between the ropes.

A cancelled fight with Manuel Charr in 2013 was followed by two more high profile injury induced postponements with Tyson Fury, for which even back in 2014 the 'Gypsy King' fumed.

"In all honesty, this is exactly what I expected. He's always been afraid of me and never wanted this fight."

After a 2016 comeback, where Haye did finally make it all the way into the ring and comfortably floored two questionable opponents in Mark De Mori and Arnold Gjergjaj, the Bermondsey born fighter set his sights on cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew after numerous ringside taunts from the Evertonian.

Come April 2017, and following a number of fractious press conferences, Haye succumbed to injury once again, albeit this time inside the ring.

His left Achilles visibly ruptured during the early rounds, and eventually handed Bellew an unlikely 11th round victory.

Fans clamoured for the rematch, which was originally set for late 2017, however, Haye again had to admit defeat to injury just a week before the fight, this time being let down by a bicep tear which the 37-year-old described as 'a freak accident that was like getting hit by a car'.

With just three months before the pairs rescheduled highly anticipated May 5 rematch, however, Haye has admitted that his reputation has caught up with him and in the event of another cancellation, he would have to compensate Bellew financially should he withdraw once again.

Haye revealed on UK TV, as per Boxing News and Views, that should he withdraw, he would pay Bellew as compensation, something he obviously wants to avoid.

Although the figure is undisclosed, a further withdraw or loss in the fight would likely signal the end of Haye's career.

The ageing fighter still has hopes for a future showdown with the current crop of British heavyweight talent, most notably a stadium showdown with Anthony Joshua, but all fans know he must first ensure he makes that opening bell in May.
