Jamie Carragher kept it real in his assessment of Virgil van Dijk on The Debate last night.Van Dijk has come back down to earth following his winner against Everton in his debut, struggling in surprise defeats to Swansea City and West Brom and being left out of the starting line-up for the win over Huddersfield on Tuesday. And Carragher believes that the £75 million man has arrived at Anfield overweight."I think it will prove to be a great signing, but he hasn't hit the ground running,” Carragher said."I think he needs to get fit and lose a bit of weight. He actually looks too big. Maybe that's to do with not having a pre-season."Carragher’s comments were never going to go down well with Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp has hit back in style.

Klopp has responded to Carragher's comments

In his Friday press conference, the Liverpool boss said that Van Dijk doesn’t need to worry about his weight - unlike Carragher.

"I'm sure Jamie needs to lose a little bit of weight but I know for Virgil it's not the case,” Klopp said, per Richard Buxton.

Boom. Klopp giving it to the Liverpool legend!

Football fans have reacted

Klopp’s comments were always going to spark a reaction and football fans are mightily surprised.

Yet it was Klopp who suggested earlier in the week that Van Dijk’s fitness isn’t up to scratch.

"Southampton play a completely different style to us, plus the fitness thing. It's clear, in half a year, Virgil will be a completely different player to last week or next week. That's completely normal,” the German said after leaving Van Dijk on the bench against Huddersfield.

"It's a very important position and very important that it is really tuned between the parts and stuff like that. For today, it was simply a physical thing and that's it."
