You just can't put your finger on Liverpool this season.

Boasting one of the finest attacks in the Premier League alongside one of the shakiest defences, each impressive result against a top four rival seems to be followed by an unflattering upset. There are few finer examples than their 1-0 to Swansea following their scintillating 4-3 win over Manchester City.Nevertheless, you'd struggle to find too many Liverpool fans dissatisfied by the job Jurgen Klopp has done in the two and a half years he's spent at Anfield. However, the distinct thing lacking from Klopp's tenure is silverware. The German certainly set his standards high during the opening months of his time in charge, reaching the League Cup and Europa League finals, only to suffer defeat to Manchester City and Sevilla respectively.

Lack of silverware under Jurgen Klopp

Since then, Liverpool haven't reached another final and with each missed opportunity, the Reds' status as England's second most decorated club has weighed heavier on Klopp's reign.

Just ask Dietmar Hamann. The ex-Liverpool midfielder has been one of Klopp's most vocal critics in recent months, arguing that the 50-year-old has done little to improve upon Brendan Rodgers' time in charge.

It seems recent results haven't changed his opinion, either, with the German delivering another brutal reel of comments on the Liverpool boss with the Daily Mail. It's caused quite the reaction from Liverpool supporters.

"At some stage they have to win something again. Telling everyone we progress is one thing, but you need something to show for it," Hamann stated.

"Liverpool is about winning trophies. You can lose against City, United, no problem. They lost a League Cup semi-final against Southampton last year over two legs. They lost against Wolves. They lost against West Brom, that’s simply not good enough."

"I got quite a bit of stick for saying it at the time. People may see it different now, I’ve not changed my mind. I hope he can turn the corner, but if I look at results in the last few days, then I just wonder where the team and the club is going.

"If a contract gets extended after losing two cup finals, what message does it send to the fans? It’s one thing getting to the final, but you have to take the opportunities. In recent years Liverpool, when the chips are down, always find a way to lose.

"A good team or outstanding team always finds a way to win. An average team finds a way not to."

Liverpool fans react on Twitter

No messing about. Funnily enough, Kopites have responded in mass and even Klopp skeptics have come in to oppose Hamann's comments. Check out the reaction:

As Klopp will argue himself, the Liverpool job is far from a short-term project and there's a long way to go to make the Reds a team capable of hoovering up trophies.

Nevertheless, it must be wondered why Liverpool haven't focused more on the League Cup and FA Cup since that agonising debut season.

It is, after all, painfully telling that a club with 18 league titles has only procured one piece of silverware since 2006. Klopp is so close to achieving something special on Merseyside but with every month, the lack of an end product will continue to harm.
