Rochdale secured their first promotion since 1969 with a 1-0 victory over Northampton at Spotland.

Keith Hill's men had wobbled with just one point from their last four games, but they were good value for the win that sealed a place in League One next season.

Northampton played their part in an entertaining game. Liam Davis wasted an early opportunity for the visitors when he shot wide from close range. Steve Guinan and Kevin Thornton went close as the Cobblers tried to capitalise on Dale's recent loss of confidence.

The nerves around Spotland were settled in the 23rd minute when the hosts opened the scoring. Chris Dagnall set up strike partner Chris O'Grady, who found the top corner of Jason Steele's goal.

O'Grady was desperately close to second midway through the second half when he raced through on goal. His initial shot was parried by Steele and his follow up header crashed against the bar.

Ian Sampson's men enjoyed periods of pressure but were unable to breach the Dale backline.
