Manchester City were held to a shock 1-1 draw to Burnley on Saturday afternoon, but the main talking point of the game was surprisingly not the result. In fact, Pep Guardiola's decision to name just six subs for the away trip to Turf Moor has generated more attention. When asked why he could not field a full team, the Spaniard answered: "We don’t have any more players, that is the reason why."We have one goalkeeper and five players. We could take one from second team but they played a game yesterday."

HIS DECISION HAS DRAWN CRITICISM

A theory has been circulated suggesting that Guardiola only named six subs as a way of protesting against the bad challenges his team have been the wrong end of in recent weeks, but regardless of his motives, many have expressed their disapproval of his decision.

Gary Neville earlier branded Guardiola's decision as a 'joke', and now Steven Gerrard has also weighed in on his thoughts on the matter.

Speaking on Premier League tonight, the Liverpool legend said: "The under 23's would have had five substitutions and you can only use three of them, so two of them would have been unused. So he could have used one of them. Or he could have used one of the subs that came on and hasn't played a full game.

"But he's sending a message out to say he is not happy with how aggressive some of the tackles have been on his team.

"But I think he has denied an opportunity to a young kid to get the experience of a lifetime.

And Gerrard believes that his decision to not fill his substitutions bench will have gone down very badly with the youngsters at Manchester City.

"If I had been shining in the under 23's or been on the fringe, I would be knock on his door," he continued.

"I would know on his door and say 'look boss you picked six subs on the weekend and I've been doing really well.'

"He would have known well before the under 23's played so he could have pulled one of them out and said 'you are not playing in the under 23's tonight because I need you for the subs bench.'

"There's no excuse for any Premier League team to name six subs in this day and age. There is no excuse."
