Football fans are always in for a treat with Monday Night Football, but few shows have been as enthralling as last night's with Wayne Rooney appearing as special guest.

Alongside Jamie Carragher, the Manchester United legend not only sunk his teeth into Watford's dramatic 4-1 victory over Chelsea but took time out to reminisce on his remarkable career. Frankly, fans could have listened to his stories all night.

From declaring his favourite strike partner, his toughest opponent and laughing at his old tackles with Carragher, all bases were covered on Sky Sports.

One of the biggest topics of conversation focused on Rooney's early days at Old Trafford and his transition from boy wonder at Everton to striker at arguably the world's biggest club.

The Englishman, despite the unbelievable pressure surrounding his move, couldn't have taken to life at United any better with 17 goals in his first season including a debut hat-trick.

Rooney talks about his Man Utd career on MNF

So, it would be fair to say he settled in well.

That was despite the fact he was sharing a dressing room with huge personalties such as Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Ruud van Nistelrooy and, of course, Roy Keane.

The Irishman was in his final season at United when Rooney arrived yet getting on the right side of the robust midfielder was as important as ever.

In the case of Rooney, he was able to earn the respect of the club legend very quickly and in truly bizarre fashion with a story he couldn't help explaining on MNF.

Funny Roy Keane-X Factor story

The 32-year-old recalled: "I always remember my first away trip, having that argument with Roy Keane.

"We were watching the rugby before we were playing Newcastle United away and he went to get some food, so I put the X Factor on and I hid the remote.

"He wasn't happy about it and we had an argument. But I think straightaway, he respected me more for standing up to him.

"He looked at me, and he respected me that day for being big enough to have a go back at him."

Who knew the X Factor could bring Keane and Rooney together?

The young star's decision to hide the remote from Keane and stand up to him seemed to go down a treat with the Irishman who may have expected a more timid reaction from the 18-year-old.

In accordance with Rooney's bullish playing style and never-say-attitude, though, even Keane didn't phase him and his progress at the top.

Something tells us that Keane turned off the X Factor, mind.
