When Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho for £142 million on January 8, they had more than three weeks to sign a replacement in the January transfer window. With the Reds competing for a top-four finish, in the last-16 of the Champions League and, at the time, still in the FA Cup, it was certainly in their best interests to replace the world-class Brazilian. But as the weeks went by, it looked more and more obvious that Jurgen Klopp wasn’t prepared to pay big money to do so.Whether or not that will prove will be a big mistake remains to be seen. But that’s not to say the Merseysiders weren’t linked with players during the window. One of those was Monaco’s Thomas Lemar. However, with the French club quoting a £90 million asking price, Klopp sensibly walked away. But will they be back in for the Frenchman in the summer?

THE LATEST ON THOMAS LEMAR

Well, it certainly seems his future at Monaco is far from certain.

According to L’Equipe, Lemar has just turned down a new contract at his current club with the 22-year-old having a little more than two years left on his deal.

L’Equipe claim that Lemar wants to keep his options open and won’t put pen to paper on a new deal before the World Cup.

What’s more, a recent report shows that Lemar is only earning £22,000-per-week - a salary that Liverpool would easily double, treble or even quadruple if they wanted to sign him.

If Lemar hasn’t signed a new deal by the summer, he will have just two years left on his deal and would surely be available for a lot less than £90 million.

That’s certainly something that Liverpool fans think and they have been reacting to the latest news on their transfer target.

LIVERPOOL FANS REACT

Check out the reaction:

It looks like Kopites would be more than happy if Lemar was to arrive in the summer. Whether Klopp is equally as keen will be discovered at the end of the season…
