Mo Salah is very unlucky not to be running away with the Premier League Player of the Year this trophy so far.

Had it not been for Kevin De Bruyne's supreme form with Manchester City, the runaway leaders, bookies would almost certainly have stopped taking bets on Salah.

The Egyptian has 21 goals and seven assists in only 25 games for Liverpool, finding the net a further seven times in nine Champions League and FA Cup outings.

It makes his £37m move from Roma in the summer look an absolute bargain, and with the transfer market as it is currently Liverpool will be looking to quadruple that fee if they ever decided to sell.

Salah is only 25, and has become the main man under Jurgen Klopp following Philippe Coutinho's £142m move to Barcelona.

His story is all the more remarkable when you consider the fact that Chelsea deemed him surplus to requirements only three years ago.

Jose Mourinho sent him out on loan to Fiorentina and then Roma, where he completed a €15m move to last summer.

His record in Serie A was excellent, with 35 goals and 24 assists in 81 appearances, and pretty much nobody predicted he would go on to better that form at Anfield.

But better it he has, and it's left Mourinho looking a little bit foolish for letting him go.

He struggled for game time at Stamford Bridge, making only six starts in 12 months at the club under the Portuguese.

And Salah has revealed the pair had a chat when the two met at Anfield earlier in the season, with Manchester United earning a 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

The Egyptian insisted that he doesn't hold a grudge against Mourinho, though some definitely would given the ability he has shown this season, and that the two have a "good" relationship.

"We talked at Chelsea when I first came back from the loan spell at Fiorentina," Salah said in an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, per the Metro.

"We also spoke after the match against Manchester United this season and have a good relationship. We didn’t talk much , but it was OK.

"Three years ago I didn’t play much, but since day one back in England I wanted to show what I can do. I think I’m doing well."

Mourinho must wish he'd been more patient with the 25-year-old at Chelsea, similarly to De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

Salah undoubtedly has the superstar factor needed to help teams win trophies, and if Mourinho had taken him to United, the gap could be much smaller between them and City.

However, it's Liverpool who've benefited hugely from the situation, and if they qualify for the Champions League again this season, it's safe to say Salah has done the majority of the work for them.
