Following their 5-1 thrashing of Everton last weekend, everyone suddenly thought Arsenal were back in with a chance of finishing in the top-four.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang marked his debut with a goal, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s produced three assists in his first start for the club.

Everything was looking positive.

But that positivity turned to negativity during the north London derby.

Arsenal travelled to Wembley to take on Spurs and left empty-handed, having been outplayed - especially during a very one-sided second-half.

Although it was only 1-0, there was a gulf in class between the two rivals.

And there is now also a gulf in the league table between Arsenal and Tottenham.

There is a seven-point gap with Mauricio Pochettino’s side moving up into third, leaving Arsenal down in sixth.

During the defeat, new signings Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang disappointed, while substitute Alexandre Lacazette missed two glorious opportunities.

And suddenly, questions were being asked of the club once again.

RIO FERDINAND ON WENGER'S BIG MISTAKE

And one of those men asking those questions was BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand.

Many football fans may have praised Arsenal for their business during the January transfer window - getting rid of Alexis Sanchez who didn't want to be there and signing two quality players.

However, despite the arrivals of Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan, Ferdinand can barely believe that Arsene Wenger didn’t persuade West Brom to sell defender Jonny Evans.

"Go and take him out of the club," Ferdinand said of Evans.

"You’re Arsenal Football Club, go and take him. He’s a centre-half at West Brom, no disrespect.

"Arsenal should be going in there and taking him, whatever it takes because they needed him."

WENGER EXPLAINS WHY HE DIDN'T SIGN EVANS

He’s got a very good point.

However, before the match Wenger explained that the Gunners didn’t quite have enough money to sign the 30-year-old.

"I said many times that we did what we wanted to do but not all that we wanted to do," Wenger told BT Sport.

"He was not available for what we could afford.

"If Kroenke gives you £200 million, Man City then get £400 million.”

MARTIN KEOWN ALSO WEIGHS IN

It was a comment that former Arsenal defender Martin Keown simply wasn’t buying.

“I can’t believe they didn’t have enough money but maybe they just couldn’t meet the valuation," Keown added.

"Arsene Wenger did say in that interview as well that nothing’s changed, he’s still in charge.

"Obviously he didn’t want Jonny Evans that much."
