Oldham's Dale Stephens and Danny Whitaker are pushing for recalls in the home game with Southend.

The duo were rested for Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Southampton to be replaced by Alex Marrow and Jon Worthington but they could be called back into the side.

However, manager Dave Penney might not want to change the side after they performed so well in getting a point at the in-form Saints.

Penney has a full squad to pick from for the visit of the Shrimpers but may again decide to rest players.

The Latics are unbeaten in four games and have picked up their form at the right time of the season moving seven points clear of the League One drop zone with three games remaining.

Southend captain Adam Barrett is likely to return to the starting line-up for their must-win game.

The centre-back has missed the last two games with a hamstring strain but after coming through training unscathed on Thursday, he is expected to be fit for the trip to Boundary Park.

Barrett's return means manager Steve Tilson will only be without long-term casualties Damian Scannell (foot) and Scott Spencer (ankle).

The Roots Hall club look likely to drop into League Two as they are seven points from safety with three games to go, so failure to beat the Latics would see them relegated.

Tilson admitted the odds of survival are against his club but he has still not given up hope.

He told the club's official website: "We need a miracle to stay up but we will do everything we can to win the last three games."
