At their best, Liverpool are capable of producing some breathtaking attacking football.

We’ve all been left stunned on numerous occasions since Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at Anfield in October 2015 by the way they sometimes blitz teams - especially, bizarrely, when playing against the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

However, while the Reds are fantastic going forwards, their defensive work often leaves a lot to be desired.

Time and time again under Klopp’s management, Liverpool’s abject defending has cost them points.

In 26 league matches this season, the Merseyside outfit have conceded 31 goals - more than any other club inside the top seven with the exception of Arsenal.

Klopp convinced the club to splash out a record £75 million fee on Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk last month but the Dutch centre-back hasn’t fixed the team’s defensive woes so far.

Liverpool suffered back-to-back defeats against Swansea City and West Brom towards the end of last month and threw away the lead twice against Liverpool last weekend.

Stan Collymore's honest opinion about Liverpool under Klopp

Ahead of their match against Southampton this afternoon, ex-Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has written a very honest article about his former employers.

Collymore feels that Klopp has turned Liverpool a modern-day version of Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United, who famously threw away a 12-point lead over Manchester United during the final months of the 1995-96 campaign.

The 47-year-old, who has made a career as an outspoken pundit since hanging up his boots in 2001, makes it clear that this isn’t a compliment.

“Jurgen Klopp is taking Liverpool back in time – but not in a good way,” he writes in the Mirror. “Remember the days when Newcastle United were everyone’s second-favourite team 20-odd years ago?

“Exciting, pleasing on the eye, laden with goals and a touch of the unexpected every time they step out on the pitch.

“Seeing Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah makes me think of Tino Asprilla, Alan Shearer and David Ginola.

“Of course, neither Keegan nor Reds boss Klopp pay anything like the attention they should to defence.

“But what other common theme runs through both of those sides? Between them, these two great entertainers have won absolutely nothing of note.”

Collymore: Liverpool have to start winning trophies again

He continues: “Liverpool FC should be winning trophies. The bigger the better.

“Wayne Rooney smacked the nail on the head as a studio guest for Sky.

“He was asked about the Reds’ front three and how exciting they were – and he replied he had played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

“And then slam-dunked the argument by adding how many pots the three of them won compared to the trio that the Merseysiders are salivating over.

“They have become increasingly desperate on the Kop – and no wonder, because all I keep seeing is Klopp defend the indefensible.”

Collymore wants the owners to set Klopp a proper target

Collymore believes that Liverpool’s owners must set Klopp a target in order to see some improvements on the pitch.

“I think Klopp needs to be given some targets. Brendan Rodgers was seen as a failure even thought he was just a Steven Gerrard slip away from landing the Holy Grail – the title,” he adds.

“Klopp has got nowhere near that yet, despite stating publicly that his aim is to win it at some stage during his six-year contract with the club.

“John W Henry and the board of the Fenway Sports Group need to put something tangible in front of Liverpool’s boss.

“Tell him that he needs to come up with a piece of silverware at the very least.

“Top four is all very well, but Klopp’s wrong.

“Liverpool is about winning trophies. Full stop.”
