Gianfranco Zola knows his chances of remaining in the West Ham hotseat depend on keeping the club in the Barclays Premier League.
The Hammers boss believes he has done a good job in managing the club through one of the most turbulent periods in their history. But predecessors Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley both failed to survive the soap opera that has swirled around Upton Park in recent years and speculation is rife that Zola is also on his way out.
"The future depends on what happens right now, so my mind is totally on that. We're going to talk (with the owners) about it at the end of the season. The important thing is to get the situation sorted, then we're going to talk about it," said Zola.
When new owners David Gold and David Sullivan took over they discovered debts of £105million - the same level of liabilities that sent Portsmouth into administration.
West Ham's financial situation forced them to cash in on key players like Collins last September. Had Gold and Sullivan not taken over in January then England trio Robert Green, Carlton Cole and Matthew Upson may also have been sold.
"Considering the problems we had since I came over everybody has dealt with the situation well," said Zola.
"If you think about it, we were one of the richest teams and became one of the poorest. We had to go through a lot of problems. We had to sell a lot of players and they were important ones for the team.
"We have managed the situation very well and I'm sorry Portsmouth couldn't do the same.
"Considering the circumstances last year we have done a good job. I don't want to say it was me because the job has been done by a group of people and I shared the good things that we did last year with all of my staff.
"This year we haven't been able to do the same but, if we do well in the last three games, considering everything we have been through it is a decent job."
