Manchester United legend Gary Neville was commentating on Sunday's shock 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United - and he dissected the Reds problems on the Gary Neville Podcast.

Matt Ritchie scored the only goal of the game in the 65th minute, despite United lining up with a frightening attack featuring Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

Jose Mourinho praised the Magpies after a painful defeat which leaves the Reds 16 points adrift of Manchester City.

"They fought like animals - I hope they take that as a compliment," said the Portuguese coach.

"The gods of football were on their side. It wasn't going to happen for us today. Newcastle gave what they have and what they don't have, that's a beautiful thing in football."

The 1-0 win took Newcastle up to 13th but Mourinho's side are now in danger of becoming embroiled in the battle for top four.

What Neville said after Newcastle United 1-0 Man United

The 42-year-old Sky Sports pundit explained in detail why United are so far behind their local rivals - the world class players at Old Trafford simply are not showing the level of intensity that is required, deemed Neville.

"The individual talent is there but to coordinate that into a team is Jose Mourinho's job in the next few months," said Neville, as per Sky Sports. "He has to make them into a team.

"They look like a team that play five per cent below the intensity that they can play at and should play at.

"That's what Jose Mourinho has to do. He has to mould this talented group of players into a team that can come together and can win the title.

"Next season will be Jose's third season and you would think in his mind, and in everyone's minds, that he has to win it next season. They have to start preparing now and days like today do damage confidence and take away the work you are trying to do.

"I still think they will finish second and they are still in the FA Cup and Champions League so there is a lot to play for, but they still have these moments where they let games drift. They missed chances, they are sloppy in the final third so many times and they have to improve that. They have to become killers in the final third and they are not at the moment."

As usual, he's absolutely spot on.
