Manchester United had an absolute shocker on Sunday as they lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Victory for the Magpies meant they moved up to 13th in the Premier League, two points clear of safety, while defeat for United was their second in three games.

Jose Mourinho's side were dominant throughout the game but let themselves down with lacklustre defending and uninspiring attacking play.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Portuguese summed up United's lack of attacking threat by saying they still wouldn't have scored if the game had been 10 hours long.

"We had some [chances] with the score at 0-0," said Mourinho. "Alexis had an open goal and then the countless opportunities of the last 20-25 minutes.

"The double [miss] of Martial is incredible in the last minute. My verdict is we could've been here for 10 hours and not scored a goal.

"They got from us a defensive mistake, and from a lateral free-kick they scored. They must have an amazing feeling after giving absolutely everything.

"They fought for their points and when they went in front, they gave their lives to keep a clean sheet. I think it's a beautiful way to win a football match."

United are now a whole 16 points behind league leaders Manchester City and with 11 games remaining of the season, the chances of them catching are very slim.

Worse still for the Red Devils is that City could win the title when they play each other at the Etihad Stadium on April 7. United may even have to give them a guard of honour.

Clearly there is a lot of work to be done at United and now Gary Neville has basically summed up exactly what went wrong against Newcastle in 21 words.

When asked by a United fan for his thoughts on Twitter this morning, Neville said they didn't play with enough intensity and were wasteful in front of goal.

NEVILLE GIVES HIS VERDICT

Neville replied:

"We let games drift, miss chances, careless in the final third and play at 10% less intensity and speed than possible."

Pretty much spot on, as most United fans will agree. Despite the signing of Alexis Sanchez last month, Mourinho's men have struggled for goals in the league, scoring two in three games.

Many believe it's because Paul Pogba is being played out of position in defensive midfield, but the problems run far deeper than that.
