It's fair to say Paul Pogba has enjoyed better weeks at Manchester United.

The Frenchman's lacklustre performance against Tottenham, which involved a feisty confrontation with Jose Mourinho, was followed by Scott McTominay playing in his place against Huddersfield and a tepid showing at Newcastle United.

It was a terrible day at the office for almost everybody involved with United as Matt Ritchie ensured the Red Devils remained dogged by winter inconsistency.

The 1-0 defeat added fuel to the Pogba debate with the Frenchman failing to make an impact on the fixture. Graeme Souness and Thierry Henry, if nobody else, engaged in the debate with few seeming able to pinpoint the right position for the 24-year-old.

The moral of the story, though, is that the higher up the pitch Pogba is played, the better.

The Pogba debate continues after Newcastle loss

Mourinho explained the decision to bring off Pogba early, by saying: "I wanted a better way to come out in the first phase against a team that was defending in a very compact block.

"I was trying that with the simplicity of Michael Carrick because he tries to make everything simple."

Nevertheless, it's easy to get the impression that Pogba is, well, being treated somewhat harshly.

Pogba started the season in flying form and it seems only recent tactical tweaks have applied the brakes on his campaign. That's certainly the opinion of Jamie Redknapp.

Redknapp: 'If Pogba was at Manchester City...'

Mourinho is notorious for ruling the clubs he manages with an iron fist and the Sky Sports pundit, in his column for the Daily Mail, believes Pogba has become a victim of the Special One's regime.

Redknapp observed: "Paul Pogba looks like a lost boy. Pogba has been heavily criticised but I feel sorry for him.

"How is it that we still do not know the best position of United’s £89million record signing?

"If he was at City, I am in little doubt he would be a star attraction alongside Kevin De Bruyne. Mourinho needs to address this situation quickly or he could risk losing the dressing room."

You've got to say, Redknapp is pretty spot on.

How much can we really criticise a man playing out of position and under the orders of a manager still seemingly confused by his premiere capture? Losing the dressing room seems rather dramatic but it wouldn't be the first time the Portuguese's control has eroded.

It's important to note that United still sit in a pretty nifty position, albeit kilometres south of City, and there's no need to panic, but the sooner Mourinho gets it right with Pogba, the better.
