"We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United."

Those were the words of Jose Mourinho two weeks ago, when he put pen to paper on a new three-year contract as manager at the Theatre of Dreams.

But since then, it's been anything but successful. A few days later United lost 2-0 to Tottenham, and on Sunday, they suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle United.

Mourinho's men were poor all over the pitch: Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had a shocker in defence, Paul Pogba was subbed in the 66th minute and Alexis Sanchez missed an open goal.

Anthony Martial also had the chance to equalise late on but squandered not one, but two clear-cut opportunities.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho pretty much summed up his side's lack of quality going forward by saying: "My verdict is we could've been here for 10 hours and not scored a goal.

"We had some [chances] with the score at 0-0. Alexis had an open goal and then the countless opportunities of the last 20-25 minutes.

"The double [miss] of Martial is incredible in the last minute."

Even Newcastle's goal came courtesy of a mistake from one of United's players; when Smalling dived to win a free-kick, the referee gave it the other way and the hosts scored.

United are now at serious risk of dropping out of the top four if their form doesn't improve, so it's up to the players to pick themselves up.

However, according to The Sun, there is one United player that Mourinho is so concerned about he's planning to have a one-to-one with him: Martial.

Ever since Sanchez's arrival in January, the young Frenchman has either been played out of position on the right-hand side or not played at all.

Indeed, he was dropped for Scott McTominay during the Huddersfield win earlier this month and only featured for 13 minutes.

Martial is now weighing up his options for the future as a result, which Mourinho is worried about and wants to provide reassurances going forward.

Mourinho is a huge fan of the 22-year-old and doesn't want to lose him. A source said: "The boss is ready to sit down with Anthony to put his mind at rest.

"His position is under threat and there are worries from him. He is going to wait and see what happens.

"PSG and Arsenal both want him but Jose still has plenty of faith in his talents and rates him highly. Jose feels he has a huge role to play in this season and the coming ones."
