Chris Smalling grabbed headlines with his performance against Newcastle United on Sunday - but for all the wrong reasons.

Manchester United lost 1-0 at St James' Park, with Newcastle's goal coming courtesy of a pretty embarrassing moment involving Smalling.

In the 64th minute, the defender went to ground under a challenge from Jonjo Shelvey but was deemed to have dived by the referee, who showed a yellow card.

Seconds later, from the resulting free-kick, Newcastle went up the other end of the pitch and scored through Matt Ritchie.

Smalling also should have given away a penalty when he fouled Dwight Gayle inside the 18-yard box, but luckily for him, nothing was given.

United fans slammed the England centre-back for his pathetic display, with club legend Phil Neville also joining in.

"They have got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David de Gea and [Nemanja] Matic out in front who protects them really well," said Neville.

"But the last two away games (against Tottenham and Newcastle), Smalling and [Phil] Jones have been a disaster.

"Against Dele Alli and Harry Kane, they got bullied. Against Newcastle did they make many mistakes, no, but they created a nervousness and a tension.

"They were making decisions that were strange. They were making decisions all day where you were thinking: 'What are you doing?'"

Smalling has had critics throughout his time at United and now a video is going viral that pretty much sums up the 28-year-old.

In the hilarious video below, Smalling, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba are taking part in a game where they must call a target in goal and shoot at it.

Smalling points to Mata and says: "I'm going for you," referencing the target with the Spaniard's head on it, but he shoots high and wide.

He then has a second go at Mata's target, which is in the top-right corner, but hits his own head straight down the centre. Cue the laughter.

SMALLING BEING... SMALLING

Typical Chris Smalling. His and Jones' performance against Newcastle was yet another reminder of how much United have missed Eric Bailly this season.

Bailly, who hasn't played since the Chelsea defeat in early November, is close to returning and could feature against Sevilla in the Champions League.
