After starting off the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Derrick Rose was traded by the team to the Utah Jazz on trade deadline day, but his time at that team was cut short as well, as he was waived by them on Saturday.

Last Thursday, the Cavaliers were part of a three-team trade with the Jazz and the Sacramento Kings to acquire Rodney Hood and George Hill while trading away Iman Shumpert, Jae Crowder, Derrick Rose, and a 2020 second-round pick in return. Rose and Crowder were sent to the Jazz, while Shumpert and the pick were sent to the Kings.

As soon as the trade went through, many speculated that the former NBA MVP would be released by Utah not long after so that he could join a team in playoff contention. He was just included in the trade as salary filler. Sure enough, after less than two days with the team, he was waived.

Rose averaged 9.8 points and 1.6 assists in 16 games for the Cavs this season, far from the form that earned him the MVP award back in 2011. Taking into account all of his previous injury problems and there's a chance we may have seen him play in the NBA for the last time, which is such a shame. He's arguably been one of the unluckiest players in the NBA in recent years.

However, if reports by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and The New York Times' Marc Stein are to be believed, there is hope for him yet, as the Washington Wizards and the Minnesota Timberwolves are rumored to be interested in acquiring the point guard now that he is a free agent.

A deal with either team would work out well for Rose, as both the Wizards and the Timberwolves are deep in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively, with both teams currently positioned in fourth in their respective conference.

Washington without All-Star point guard John Wall for at least another month due to recovering from knee surgery, so Rose could potentially be a member of the point guard rotation currently of Tomas Satoransky and Tim Frazier until Wall is able to return.

The Timberwolves are interested in Rose too, and this would mean teaming up once more with head coach Tom Thibodeau, who was the former MVP's head coach during his heyday at the Chicago Bulls. Rose would still only be in rotation here, but Thibodeau could be the right coach to help him get his career back on track before it's too late.
