Predicting the Premier League's next batch of talent is never the easiest of tasks.

Nevertheless, whether it's a weighty reputation, a star-studded family member or a viral skills compilation on YouTube, sometimes you just can't help forecasting a player as the league's next star. Fans, pundits and newspapers are all guilty.

Few sources like to try their hand at predicting quite like The Guardian, though.

Every year, the UK publication tries to predict the 'Next Generation' at every Premier League club that year by selecting who they consider their most talented young player to be.

They certainly set high standards for themselves with these predicative articles harbouring the disclaimer: "The Guardian has identified some of the best young talent coming through in the Premier League, picking one player from each club born between 1 September 1997 and 31 August 1998, an age band also known as first-year scholars."

A key part of the project lies with tracking their progress over the next half-decade and their first batch of 20 is approaching its fifth birthday.

So, four years on, how are the 20 young stars that The Guardian chose in 2014 getting on before their big update? Take a look below:

Arsenal - Chris Willock

Failed to make a single appearance in the Arsenal first-team, limited to cameos in pre-season friendlies and eventually moved to Benfica in 2017. He has three goals in 13 appearances for their B team so far.

Aston Villa - Easah Suliman

Still plying his trade at Aston Villa, but was loaned out to League Two Grimsby Town in the January transfer window after a mediocre spell with Cheltenham Town.

Burnley - Khius Metz

Metz continues to climb his way through the ranks at Burnley and has collected first-team experience with National League North outfit Chorley FC.

Chelsea - Dominic Solanke

Only made one senior appearance in the famous blue jersey, despite a successful loan spell with Vitesse Arnhem that eventually saw him move to Liverpool. He has enjoyed far more game-time under Jurgen Klopp yet still awaits that lingering first goal.

Crystal Palace - Corie Andrews

Sadly released by Palace over the summer and now playing with Aylesbury United in the seventh tier of English football.

Everton - Kieran Dowell

Smashing it on loan at Nottingham Forest with nine goals in 31 appearances and continues to feature for the England under 21s. A very promising future remains for the 20-year-old.

Hull City - Matt Hinchliffe

Released by the Tigers in the summer of 2016 with his twin brother, Ben, enjoying greater success with a professional contract and an outside chance of breaking into the first-team.

Leicester City - Hamza Choudhury

After two loan spells in two years at Burton Albion, Choudhury is pushing for a break-through at the King Power Stadium and made his long-awaited Premier League debut in November.

Liverpool - Adam Phillips

Waved goodbye to Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer and secured a switch to Norwich City. A drop to the Championship has offered little change, though, despite first-team football out on loan with Cambridge United.

Manchester City - Tosin Adarabioyo

Still at Manchester City and, despite still awaiting his Premier League bow, is making a handsome living on a £25,000-a-week contract at the club.

Manchester United - Marcus Rashford

Some predictions are good and then there's this. Rashford burst onto the scene at Old Trafford in March 2016 and hasn't looked back, accumulating 108 first-team appearances, 29 goals and four trophies since then.

Newcastle United - Stefan Broccoli

A series of injuries saw Newcastle release him last summer with the youngster still contemplating his future as a free agent.

QPR - Tom Matthews

The capitulation of his time at QPR saw him move to the Welsh Premier League where he spent time at both The New Saints and Airbus UK. Fell down to the Eastern Counties League over the summer, signing for Wroxham.

Stoke City - Oliver Shenton

Made his Premier League debut back in the 2014-15 campaign, but still awaiting his second appearance three years on. Still at the Bet365 Stadium and recently spent time on loan with Wrexham.

Southampton - Harvey Willard

Dropped down to non-league after leaving Southampton in the summer of 2016. Currently without a club after flitting between Maidstone and Eastbourne across a series of loan departures.

Sunderland - Luke Molyneux

Signed a professional contract at the Stadium of Light in 2017 and remains a regular in the under-23 set-up as he vies for a place in the first-team.

Swansea City - Aaron Lewis

Another graduate into the under-23 team at his original club with Lewis working his way up the club's infrastructure as they fight for Premier League survival.

Tottenham - Cameron Carter-Vickers

Out on his second loan spell of the season with Ipswich Town after a successful six months with Sheffield United, despite still waiting for his Tottenham debut. Has one cap for the United States.

West Brom - Kyle Edwards

Continues to represent the Baggies at youth level and is now spending time out on loan with League Two Exeter City. He has one goal to his name in 14 appearances for the Devon-based site.

West Ham - Sam Howes

Unsuccessful loan ventures with Hampton & Richmond Borough and Wealdstone FC saw him released by West Ham last summer. Nevertheless, there is still quiet optimism around his future with Watford under-23s swooping in to secure his services.
