West Brom’s hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship suffered another blow on Monday night as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea.A brace from Eden Hazard, plus another goal from Victor Moses, sealed all three points for Antonio Conte’s side. The result leaves the Baggies rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, seven points from safety with 11 matches of the season remaining. However, the result might have been very different had Jay Rodriguez not wasted a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock shortly after coming on as a fourth-minute substitute. The 28-year-old was named on the bench at the start of the match but played almost the entire match after Daniel Sturridge was forced off early with a suspected hamstring injury.Rodriguez had an instant chance to score but his shot was deflected wide. Then, shortly afterwards, he found himself one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois but missed the target after taking the shot early.

The question Sky asked Pardew about Rodriguez

Following the final whistle, West Brom boss Alan Pardew was asked about Rodriguez’s miss by Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison.

“It seemed like an odd decision, do you think that had anything to do with what’s happening off the field, without going into any details particularly?”

Pardew was clearly angered by the question but issued a calm response: “I think that’s really not a nice question, if I’m honest. I don’t think that’s anything to do with it. I don’t know where you get that judgment from, I’m sorry.”

Rodriguez is the subject of an FA investigation

For those unaware of what Davison was referring to, Rodriguez was charged following an incident against Brighton and Hove Albion last month.

“It is alleged he used abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race,” a statement on the FA’s website read.

Cameroon international Gaetan Bong claimed the alleged racial abuse occurred during the match and the FA’s investigation continues.

"Absolutely gutted and in disbelief at the situation I find myself in," Rodriguez tweeted last week. "I 100% deny the false allegation and will take the correct legal advice to prove my innocence."
