Despite being over 20 years into his professional wrestling career, former WWE Champion Chris Jericho remains one of the hottest names in the industry.

Recently Jericho had the hottest feud of the year with Kenny Omega over in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). The pair built their rivalry up for several months before it came to a head at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in Japan.

The pair put on a five star match which Jericho ended up losing, however, they stole the show nonetheless. Last year Jericho came very close to adding a huge accomplishment to his WWE career - but it was cancelled at the last second.

Jericho recently took to his podcast, Talk Is Jericho, to talk about the original plans WWE had for him at last year's WrestleMania 33 event.

Originally Vince McMahon pitched to Chris Jericho that he'd beat Kevin Owens for the Universal Title at "The Show Of Shows" before dropping it to Brock Lesnar at the next pay-per-view (PPV) event (quotes via IWNerd):

“[I]t was in November [2016] maybe, Vince [McMahon] said, ‘Okay, at WrestleMania it’s you and Kevin Owens for the world title [Universal Title].

"You’re gonna win the world title at WrestleMania.’ ‘Wow, winning the world title at WrestleMania?….. [Vince] goes, ‘Yeah. You’ll lose it the next pay-per-view to Brock [Lesnar].’ I’m like, ‘That’s cool!'”

Jericho said he was excited for the opportunity because it would've been the fist time he'd win the World Title playing a babyface:

“And for me I’d never won the title as a babyface either, ever. It’s been six times but always as a heel.

"So this was kind of like, ya know, we’re not marks here, but it’s a pretty cool thing. Let’s be honest.”

When Brock Lesnar started his feud with Goldberg, however, those plans changed. Goldberg instead won the Universal Title at Fastlane before dropping it to Lesnar at WrestleMania.

Jericho had a singles match against Kevin Owens for the United States Title:

“One week later Survivor Series happens, Brock versus Goldberg. Goldberg beats Brock in a minute. And that’s when Brock went, ‘I can work with this guy [Goldberg].

"I want to work with him. I’ll lose in a minute, but only if I can beat him for the title at WrestleMania.’

"And Vince had to make a decision: what’s the bigger box office? Ya know and obviously, it was Brock and Goldberg, and Chris and Kevin take back seat.”

What are your thoughts on Jericho originally being scheduled to win the Universal Title against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 33 last year? And how do you feel about Goldberg's return nipping those plans in the bud? Would you have preferred to see Jericho as the Universal Champion instead? Have YOUR say in the comments section below, and the fourth episode of GiveMeSport’s WWE podcast is here!
