Croatian defender Dejan Lovren has not been a resounding success since signing for Liverpool from Southampton for £20m in 2014.His three-and-a-half year spell in Merseyside has been littered by embarrassing mistakes.Lovren has started 18 Premier League games this season and Jurgen Klopp is still showing plenty of faith in the 28-year-old centre-half.He started alongside £75m signing Virgil van Dijk in Wednesday night's impressive 5-0 win over Porto in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah took the plaudits for their goals but the Liverpool manager made sure to praise the defence too."We defended really well and that was important,” Klopp told reporters after the crushing victory.“All the midfielders were fantastic and most important the three boys up front helped us. They did it in an outstanding manner."Mane scored a brilliant hat-trick to all but secure Liverpool a spot in the quarter-finals.

What Liverpool fans were all tweeting about Lovren

The former Southampton star has come under heavy criticism from the Liverpool supporters during his time at Anfield.

However, his improvement since Van Dijk's arrival has not gone unnoticed and fans on social media were keen to raise the point.

The £75m spent on Van Dijk will be a bargain if he can shore up Liverpool's leaky defence.

Simon Mignolet has been dropped by Klopp but Loris Karius has also enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since the Dutchman's arrival.

"Virgil has played quite a bit now and we're getting more used to each other -- that's important for the team," Karius told the Liverpool Echo.

"But the more he gets used to our style, he's finding his feet more and more. It's good to see and as a keeper you feel comfortable having players like that in front of you."

Liverpool have kept two clean sheets in a row and host West Ham and Newcastle in the Premier League in their next two fixtures.
