Manchester United have a real talent on their hands in the form of Scott McTominay.

It's becoming increasingly difficult for young English players to make a breakthrough in the Premier League, never mind at was is arguably the world's biggest club. So far, though, McTominany is making brilliant strides at Old Trafford.

Amidst all the drama surrounding Paul Pogba and his role in the United midfield, the 21-year-old was deployed in his place against Huddersfield United for his 14th appearance in the famous red jersey.

To say Jose Mourinho was pleased with the youngster's performance, would be putting things mildly.

"I made a few changes thinking about the characteristics of this game and I think this kid [McTominay] has a great desire to recover the ball when the team is not in possession," the Special One remarked.

McTominay attracting praise at Old Trafford

"He's a kid that chases the ball, that tries to recover high up the pitch and when he has the ball it is always simple and against opponents like Huddersfield, so close and with so many bodies behind the ball, the simplicity sometimes is genius.

"You don't have space, you have to open spaces by playing simple, so was a decision to play the kid."

Major praise, no doubt, and it's a sense of optimism complimented by Michael Carrick who is embarking on his final three months as a United player before joining the coaching staff.

He has orated the thoughts of many United fans in proclaiming McTominay as his potential successor and his verdict on the 21-year-old simply oozes class.

Michael Carrick reckons McTominay is his successor

Speaking to Manchester United's official website, he stated: "Scotty has done great. The improvement has been so great over the last six to 12 months, when we've seen him training with us a lot more.

"You can see that he steps up to every challenge that has been set in every environment. He is an athlete. He is strong, quick and very good on the ball. He has got all of the attributes to have a really good career.

"I know he will take my place someday and that is not something I would be afraid of, or try to put him off, because it is important to help the future and Scott is definitely that.

"It is my responsibility to do all I can to help him."

There would be few complaints if McTominay inherited the mantle at Old Trafford, even if he has a long way to go to emulate Carrick. If Mourinho gives him the chances, though, the sky's the limit.
