All the talk prior to Manchester United's FA Cup win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday was surrounding Paul Pogba, his form and his relationship with Jose Mourinho.

However, the 24-year-old missed the 2-0 win due to illness, and it remains to be seen whether he will return for Wednesday's huge trip to Sevilla in the Champions League.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, who scored 183 goals in 369 games for the club over two spells, is the latest ex-player to weigh in on the current Pogba debate.

In addition to defending the Man Utd star, Fowler has also pinpointed the main reason why he thinks the midfielder is struggling to produce his undoubted quality at the moment.

Fowler on Pogba

Fowler began his column for The Mirror by discussing Pogba's mentality and how he'll be feeling after being either taken off or benched in his last three Man Utd appearances.

"The players at the top are there because they have ego, they have desire," the 42-year-old wrote. "They have belief and pride. Pogba will be bursting with pride.

"And that pride will be hurting like hell when he isn’t playing well, when things are not going for him. I can guarantee he knows he’s not playing well at the moment.

"But his pride will tell him it’s not all his fault. He’s a talented player, he knows that talent hasn’t disappeared overnight."

Fowler: Why Pogba is suffering at Man Utd

Liverpool's sixth all-time leading scorer then went on to outline what he believes is the key factor in Pogba's loss of form, adding: "There are other factors which will hurt him.

"My guess is he’s suffering a bit because of the level of the Premier League. In Italy, he was able to play in a system which gave him complete freedom.

"In England, teams are more organised. There is not the freedom to do what you like, keep running forward and leave big gaps in midfield."

Does Fowler have a point?

During his best year at Italian champions Juventus, Pogba had the star-studded trio of Arturo Vidal, Claudio Marchisio and Andrea Pirlo, who all gave him more license to attack.

However, since returning to Man United, the gifted France international has often been found wanting when it comes to defensive responsibility, leaving Nemanja Matic exposed at times.

So, Fowler has urged fans not question Pogba's determination, but the £89.3 million man must rediscover his top form to boost United's hopes of success this season.

Despite his recent struggles, Pogba has still managed to register three goals and nine assists in 17 Premier League matches, and a further assist from three European outings.
