After the humbling defeat against George Groves this weekend, Chris Eubank Jr got told the hard truth so difficult to hear in the immediate aftermath of a loss of any kind by his coach and father Chris Eubank Sr.

Despite losing by 11 points against Groves on Saturday, Eubank Jr thought he got the upper hand in Manchester, saying it was close and he felt he did enough in the later rounds to win.

In the dressing room later, Eubank Jr asked his father if he thought he beat Groves.

Hesitant, Eubank Sr said: “You’ll need to watch it back anyway. Let's drop that subject and just think about…”

Junior interrupted: “Be real. If you guys think that he won then say it.”

To which Senior admitted: “I mean, look. The decision was the right decision. You’ve got to see it. You’ve got to see it.”

It’s admirable to see a beaten athlete not looking for excuses and wanting the truth, and a father doing his duty as his coach to give him the hard truth.

Eubank Sr praised Groves performance against his son.

“I am stunned. He [Groves] boxed beautifully I can’t take anything away from him there.”

The wondering question that might be circulating in the Eubank clan now is if changes need to be made. Will Junior find a new coach or is their partnership strong enough?

This conundrum echoes the one Floyd Mayweather Jr had towards the later stage of his career. Mayweather chose to replace his father and long-time coach Floyd Mayweather Sr for greener pastures, which he found.

Other famous father-son boxing partnerships, among many others, include Julio Cesar Chávez and his son Julio, and George Foreman and his son George.

Boxing often runs in the family, and the names too.
