Before Manchester City made the short trip to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fifth round, most said it would be an easy, uneventful victory for Pep Guardiola's side.

However, the Monday night fixture was anything but, as the Latics claimed a famous giant-killing by beating City 1-0, courtesy of a late goal from Will Grigg.

But, a lot of the headlines from the game were for all the wrong reasons, with Sergio Aguero involved in an ugly clash with a pitch invading Wigan fan after the final whistle.

The striker appeared to lash out at the supporter after being provoked, with the BBC airing footage of the incident shortly before the end of their broadcast.

It has since been revealed that the whole debacle will be investigated by the FA, with Goal reporting that the governing body will use fan footage as evidence, as well as a statement from Aguero himself.

The striker will surely defend his corner, with his actions certainly out-of-character and The Times have now explained what Aguero has told his close friends about the incident.

Journalists Paul Hirst and Paul Joyce wrote: "Sergio Agüero has told friends he believes he was spat at by a Wigan Athletic fan who invaded the pitch after Manchester City’s shock FA Cup defeat at the DW Stadium last night.

"Agüero angrily lashed out at a supporter who aimed a punch at him on the pitch after the 1-0 loss. The Argentina forward, clearly annoyed at being harangued by a number of Wigan supporters, pushed the Wigan fan away with his right arm.

"The 29-year-old chased the supporter in question before being restrained and ushered off the pitch by Mikel Arteta, the City assistant coach.

"It is understood that Aguero's ire was sparked because he felt he was spat at."

If what Aguero has told friends turns out to be true, few will be able to build a credible argument that condemn his actions.

The pitch invasion itself should never have occurred and if Aguero has had to defend himself from such a disgraceful act, he should not receive a punishment from the FA.
