At the Royal Rumble last month WWE fans were shocked and excited to see former Rumble winner and World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio return

He was one of the final men involved in the match before Shinsuke Nakamura went on to win the match. Mysterio has been away from WWE for several years; working for promotions such as Lucha Underground on the indies.

Mysterio is now winding down in his professional wrestling career and would love to return to WWE for several reasons. The ability to work a part time schedule and still get paid handsomely would certainly be a plus.

Also, Mysterio's son is getting ready to start off his professional wrestling career, and giving him access to the WWE Performance Center would be a great benefit.

It's still up in the air if Mysterio will sign with WWE, as we haven't heard much on the status of negotiations.

That's until now that is. Mysterio recently did an interview with Inside the Ropes backstage at a recent 5 Star Wrestling event he revealed negotiations are still open regarding a WWE return (quotes via Wrestling Inc.):

"Right now, the conversation is still in the open with WWE so I am hoping that when the time is right and we sit down to talk about the future of Rey Mysterio with WWE, if there is any future with Rey Mysterio, it is going to be good for both parties as much as it will be good for WWE as it will be good for me.

"I think it is in the best interest for the both of us. Putting that aside, whatever happens there, hopefully we can continue to do business with 5 Star Wrestling [indie Wrestling in general]. I don't see why not."

If Mysterio did come back to WWE he would love the opportunity to work with current WWE Champion AJ Styles:

"Man, there are so many strong names that have been around for quite some time. AJ Styles is one of them.

"I think that AJ and myself would have a pretty nice run together. Finn Balor, I think I would have a pretty good run with Finn. There are a lot of names that are being thrown out there.

"If I came back, would I be part of the 205 Live division? Heavyweight division? It is just hard to say. I think that whatever the fans want to see, if I do come back, that is what we will give them."

What are your thoughts on Mysterio saying that contract negotiations are still open with WWE about a possible return? Do you think Mysterio will get a deal that he wants in which he's still allowed to work indie dates while also working for WWE? And should WWE allow Superstars to do this more often? Have YOUR say in the comments section below, and the fourth episode of GiveMeSport’s WWE podcast is here!
