Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba looks set to return to the starting XI for Wednesday night's Champions League last 16 tie with Sevilla.

The 24-year-old Frenchman, who has been heavily criticised for his recent performances, missed Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town.

Pogba has featured alongside Nemanja Matic in a midfield two for recent defeats away at Tottenham and Newcastle.

His sub-standard defensive contribution has led to many pundits questioning whether Pogba should be playing higher up the pitch.

“Mourinho still has the conundrum of what he does with Paul [Pogba]," said retired Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

“There’s no way you can play him in centre midfield sitting in a two in a big game.”

Lampard: How Pogba can learn from Fabregas

Legendary Premier League midfielder Frank Lampard was in the BT Sport studio for Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas produced an excellent defensive performance alongside N'Golo Kante and Lampard believes Pogba can learn a lot from the 30-year-old.

"In the games I've seen, Pogba's defensive awareness has been the issue," said Lampard.

"You have to have defensive responsibilities whether you're in a two or a three. He's got to work at it, watch games back, work on his relationships with players."

"You have to sacrifice, you have to take each game on its merits," said Lampard when asked about Pogba's defensive indiscipline on BT Sport.

"I played as a two when we [Chelsea] won the Champions League and I spent most of my time in front of the back four trying to stop things happening.

"Cesc Fabregas, he wants to be on the ball but, tonight, he sacrificed for the team and stayed in position - and you have to do that sometimes."

Lampard is spot on.

Fabregas unquestionably loves to be on the ball but drastically changed his game in order to help his team.

Roy Keane said something similar last week, albeit in more brutal fashion.

“I think any top player in midfield should be able to play in a two or a three," said the former Man United captain.

“So the guy just needs to do better himself and focus on what the game of football is all about.”
