Brett Pitman scored his 26th league goal of the season for Bournemouth as Port Vale's play-off drive stalled with a 4-0 defeat.

After an edgy first half in which Lewis Haldane struck the post for Port Vale and Pitman did the same for Bournemouth, the game came to life after the break.

Pitman eased Bournemouth towards a comfortable win by opening the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Rhoys Wiggins took a corner on the right and Pitman converted from 12 yards. Bournemouth's manager Eddie Howe sent on Alan Connell as a 74th minute substitute and Connell responded by scoring twice in the next seven.

Connell's first came in the 76th minute with a lob from the edge of the area and his second after 81 came from close range from a cross by Liam Feeney.

Feeney was involved again after 86 minutes with a centre headed in by another substitute, Josh McQuoid.

The final whistle prompted a pitch invasion by Bournemouth fans among a crowd of 9,055, the biggest this season.
