Manchester United's Brazil-based scout, John Calvert-Toulmin, recommended Sir Alex Ferguson sign a teenage midfielder during his scouting mission on Rafael and Fabio Da Silva.

The Red Devils had recently prospered from buying teenagers - Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney had developed into two of the finest players in the Premier League.

So in 2008, one year after signing Anderson, the Red Devils splashed out £3m to sign Rodrigo Possebon from Internacional.

The 18-year-old defensive midfielder enjoyed a very promising start to life at Old Trafford.

Possebon made his debut on the first day of the 2008/09 Premier League season, coming off the bench to replace Ryan Giggs in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

However, the highly-rated Brazilian would only go on to make two more Premier League appearances at Man United.

Possebon suffered an injury in a League Cup match against Middlesborough in September 2008 - and that was the beginning of the end for a player who's career has since been plagued by injury.

He joined Braga on a season-long loan in 2009 but returned to Manchester in January after making only one appearance for the Portuguese club.

Possebon's sad journey since leaving Manchester in 2010

At the age of 20, the Italy U20 international left Man United to return to Brazil to join Santos.

Possebon went on to make 30 appearances for the Brazilian giants before moving back to Europe to sign for Italian club Vicenza.

He didn't make a single first team appearance before returning to his native Brazil for spells with Criciuma and then Mirassol.

They weren't particularly successful spells and, in 2013, Possebon found himself signing for Juventude in the Brazilian fourth tier at the age of 24.

He took a two-year break from the game after an unsuccessful stint at Nautico before returning to professional football with Brazilian minnows URT, and next Passo Fundo.

On January 7th 2018, Possebon signed for Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Possebon's career just hit rock bottom

Now Possebon's disappointing career has just hit a new low.

Just six weeks after making the exciting switch to Asia, the 29-year-old today learned that he had been released by his new club Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Fox Sports Asia, the club decided to release Possebon on February 22 due to "a back injury and a lack of fitness".

The club confirmed the news on their Facebook page.

It's been a heartbreaking journey for Possebon - we can only wish him all the best for the future.
