Yesterday, Conor McGregor released a statement on his Instagram account about his future with UFC. The Irishman revealed to his fans that he will be stepping inside the Octagon to fight again in the near future.

McGregor also revealed that he had already asked to return, as he wanted to compete against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 on March 7 after UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway pulled out of the event due to a leg injury.

Notorious also says that the reason why Brian Ortega was booked as Holloway's replacement and not him was that he 'was told there wasn't enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need.'

However, upon hearing these comments, Edgar's camp has blasted McGregor on social media, stating that the Irishman has turned down a fight against American three times in the past, and that he wasn't even considered as a possible replacement for The Answer at UFC 222.

Mark Henry, Edgar's coach, said on his Instagram: “You ducked him 3 times in the past, (Frankie Edgar) and his manager (Ali Abdelaziz) asked for (Conor’s) name specifically when Max (Holloway) went down (but we knew you only take stylistically what is a good match for you and you ducked him 3x already).

“It’s soo soo simple if your dog crap post is true fight Frankie next,” Henry later added. “Weather (sic) it be mma or boxing. And I promise you he won’t hammerfist on top your head he knows the rules. But YOU WON’T!”

Edgar’s longtime manager, Ali Abdelaziz, called Notorious an offensive name before saying, via MMA Fighting: “He had so many opportunities. Now he wants to fight Frankie? That’s funny.”

When McGregor does finally return to the Octagon, it is unlikely that we'll see a fight against Edgar. Not because Edgar's camp doesn't want the fight to happen, but due to the fact Notorious will have more high-profile opponents to contend with than The Answer.

McGregor is heavily tipped to fight the winner of UFC 223's Tony Ferguson vs Khabib Nurmagomedov, which is scheduled to take place on April 7, before potentially completing the trilogy against longtime rival Nate Diaz later this year.
