Manchester United divided opinion with their defensive performance at Sevilla on Wednesday, but Jose Mourinho won't be reading too much into the criticism.
At the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, the Special One orchestrated a cagey performance and relied on David de Gea to thwart two brilliant first-half chances. Nevertheless, it was a prudent approach from the Portuguese that could pay off in the second leg at Old Trafford.
All in all, it made for a quiet evening for the Red Devils' attack and Romelu Lukaku had the only clear opportunity for the visitors when he ballooned a volley over the bar before half-time.
United fans were convinced that Lukau had to do better and Paul Scholes gave them a mouthpiece in the BT Sport studio, lamenting the showing by stating: "Again, Lukaku has to be better.
"When you play counter-attacking football, the ball has got to stick.
Romelu Lukaku criticised for Sevilla performance
"He was so weak. You’ve got to be strong, you’ve got to get hold of the ball. You’ve got to get your touch right and bring players in. Most of the time, he’s given the ball away."
Ouch. Just how fair the criticism has been is cause for debate with Lukaku boasting 21 goals this season but skeptics will always cite his poor performances in the bigger games.
Gary Neville has never been Lukaku's biggest fan since his big-money switch to United and his comments after the Sevilla clash suggests he wasn't exactly impressed.
Furthermore, the former Red Devils right-back has even hypothesised that Alexis Sanchez could be favoured as the club's lead man if Lukaku doesn't pick up his game.
Alexis Sanchez may take his place
In a Facebook live Q&A for Sky Sports Super Sixes, he expounded: "I think Lukaku has done well but there comes a point where you'd think Sanchez would go up top and you'll see Lukaku come out the team."
It's a big statement from Neville and potentially one with some traction.
It would foolish to think Lukaku is in poor form at the moment although United fans have been calling for Sanchez to play more centrally for sometime now, and there's every chance Mourinho could try it out.
Besides, the longer Lukaku flops in the big games, the more fans and Mourinho alike will dismiss it as a coincidence.
And few Premier League centre-backs will want Sanchez hurtling towards them with the ball at his feet, that's for sure.
